COMMODORE’S REPORT

Do I get the feeling right that there is far too much going on and/or is it that I just don’t manage time very well anymore. Seems the faster I go the further behind I get. “Two steps up and three back seems to be my calling of late”. Someone once said: “Take care of the minutes, for the hours will take care of themselves!” Perhaps I need to take heed. Between the consistently great OYC social events, cruising activities, etc and the less great compulsory meetings, boat maintenance, residence maintenance, vehicle issues and the like, “retirement has become a full time job”. I guess I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Well, on to new items.  A new section will appear in this Seascape edition titled “Members Bulletin Board”. A recommendation was advanced and welcomed to have a “For Sale” column in the Seascape. So, have a look at the column and the first ad from John Chille. The protocols for ads are:

  • Member only “For Sale Ads” initially please
  • Kindly restrict your ad to 40 words or less
  • A small photo is acceptable as well

  • Send your ad to me please for review [I may take liberties]
  • I will structure the column (the ads) and forward all to Charles Chernack for the final review and placement in the monthly Seascape.
  • An ad may be repeated for the following month only if I receive your request to do so prior to the publication of the following months Seascape.

As you know the actual publication date of the Seascape on the Web page is not cast in granite. We strive to have the monthly copy completed not later that the first of each month, At times we fail to reach that goal and the Web page entry may be a few days later. [It is the computers fault of course] We shall “test’ this Members Bulletin Board” opportunity for a few months before committing to any degree of Seascape permanence.

HARBOR VIEW: Mike Jackson, Vice Commodore

Reconfiguration Project

The design is completed and will be posted on our bulletin board in the very near future.  The formal request for a permit as been submitted to the City of Alameda and we should have their approval to begin construction in about four to six weeks. We are getting closer to this really happening ………… I’ll believe it when I see it.

Long Term Harbor Plan

Your Harbor Committee and your Board of Directors have approved a new harbor policy that mandates that, for the first time, we will have a long term harbor plan.  This new policy/harbor plan looks forward 16 years and sets out the harbor’s reconstruction and maintenance requirements; and how the Club should pay for it without any increase in debt.

Around the Harbor

It has come to my attention that several of us that keep our boats in the OYC harbor are using our hoses without an automatic shut-off nozzle. It may seem like a little thing to worry about, but if everyone did it our water bill would go through the roof.  If you are an offender please stop at your local hardware store and pick one up.

A Clean Marina Initiative is being pursued by Craig; this initiative is intended to make our marina operations far more friendly to our environment.  If we are granted this status we will be the first Yacht Club in Northern California to achieve this status. You may see some new brochures on our bulletin board; please take a minute or two to become familiar with their contents - all of us are a part of the solution.

Have a safe August.

FROM THE HOUSE: Carolyn Hooper, Rear Commodore

Rumor was right!  Our first quarterly buffet on June 1st was an Italian night.  Patrick did a fantastic job setting up the display.  If you look at the attached picture, you can actually image being in Italy, sitting outside at a Café with wonderful food and wine.  Now that we have all had our dream, please mark your calendars for the next buffet on September 7th.

Happy Belated Fathers Day to all our dads out there!  Hope you got lots of goodies for your boats.

I would like to ask everyone to come to brunch on Sundays and bring friends and family and enjoy the alcoholic beverages and great food!

Our Board of Directors has approved the purchase of new tables for our dining room.  These will be light weight and easier for our staff to handle.

The Board of Directors also passed an addendum to our current “Smoking Policy”  which states that there is no smoking allowed in the clubhouse.

Starting immediately, there will be no smoking allowed on any of the verandas upstairs in the dining room/bar area.  This is in compliance with the law that states “people may not smoke within 25 feet of doors/windows or vents.”

If you have been at the bar lately, you will have noticed that the sliding door in that area does not open.  We are replacing the unit and shortly will have a new door that “works.”

As always, please feel free to contact me if you have any concerns or questions.

Hope everyone is having a great summer!

A Ferry Ride into the Past

Last year, a group of OYC members traveled to Sausalito to visit the Corps of Engineer’s Bay Model.  Dick Jordon, a volunteer docent at the Model who specializes in boating interests, conducted a special tour for our group.  Dick gave us a lot of good information.  Following his presentation, most of the bunch went to a nearby restaurant for lunch.

We have an excellent opportunity to do something similar this month.  Bruce Hood, a long-time Bay Area Potter sailor and friend of the OYC, is a volunteer docent at the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park (www.nps.gov/safr). Bruce’s special interest is the 256-foot square-rigger called the “Balclutha.” One of the reasons is that the ship was built in Scotland, in the 19th Century.  Bruce’s own heritage is Scottish.  He keeps that background alive with occasional trips to Scotland and frequent participation in Caledonian Games here in California.  Bruce has agreed to lead a special tour of the Park and the Balclutha for the Club.

The event will be on Saturday, July 21st.  Bruce will meet us at the Blue and Gold Ferry Terminal at Alameda Point in time to catch the 9:10 a.m. ferry to San Francisco.  That will put us at Pier 41 at 9:35, and a leisurely walk will get us to the Park around 10 a.m.  We then can visit both the Maritime Museum and the Visitor Center before going on board the Balclutha.  In addition, there are four other historic vessels tied up at the Pier that we can see if we wish to do so.  Following our tour, we can walk across the street to Capurros’s for lunch . . . and then catch either the 1:10 or 2:50 ferry back to Alameda.  By the way, there is plenty of parking at Alameda Point (also called the Main Street terminal). If you need directions for getting there, check the Ferry website (www.eastbayferry.com).

Due to space considerations, tours of the Balclutha work best when there are no more than 12 people.  We will limit registrations to that number.  There is a sign-up sheet outside the OYC office, or you can phone in (510-522-6868) or register by email   (emendes@oaklandyachtclub.com).  There is no charge for the tour itself.  The round-trip ferry ride will be $11 for adults, $6.50 for seniors (65 and over), and $5.50 for juniors (5-12 years old).  Kids under five go free, when accompanied by an adult.  Admission to the Park is $5 for adults, with no charge for children under 16.

If you have not been to the Maritime Park, or if your last visit was a long time ago, you will want to join the group for this special OYC tour.  Bruce Hood is an excellent interpreter who, before retiring a few years ago, had a long career as a professor of theater and drama.  And, the Park is a great place to get smart about the SF Bay Area’s seafaring heritage.  That background, incidentally, includes the Old Alaska Packers Association, which had an extensive salmon packing and distribution operation just east of where the OYC now sits.  The Balclutha was part of that operation at one time.

So, be sure to sign-up.  And, if you have any kids or grandkids in the area, bring them along.

Membership Committee

From the Membership Corner…..

Everyone’s an Ambassador!

Oakland Yacht Club has been known for years as the “Friendliest Club on the Bay”. This distinguishing characteristic is one we all need to help promote, especially as it relates to our newer members.  One way established members can help promote this reputation is by helping new members feel welcome.  Be on the alert for name badges with that little green dot!  When you see one, try to shift into “ambassador mode” - be a buddy at the bar, strike up a conversation, ask them about their boat or perhaps invite them to sit with you for dinner. We all remember what it was like to be new……wanting to be welcomed, learn about social, cruise and race activities and most of all wanting to “connect” with other members who might have similar interests.  OYC has a big reputation to live up to and we need everyone’s help to make sure that our new folks feel welcome.

Committee Members Needed

Another way to make a difference is to join the Membership Committee.  We all know how important the work of our House and Harbor Committees are.  Equally important is the work of the Membership Committee.  Membership plays a key roll in the long term viability of our organization.  We are often the first point of contact for new members and are most certainly the ones who follow up on inquiries, invite prospective members to join us on a Friday for drinks and check in later to make sure they are enjoying their OYC experience.  In specific terms the efforts of this committee may make difference between a prospective member joining OYC or selecting another organization.   We also work on member retention, helping to ensure that members stay on from year to year.   This year the committee is quite a bit smaller and we could use a few more hands.  So if you are interested in promoting the viability and growth of our organization from now into the future, why not join us in our efforts.  You can contact Frank Hooper, our Membership Chair or any member of the Committee if you’d like to volunteer, share your ideas or make comments/suggestions.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

OYC Delta Daze – August 10-17

This year we will be cruising off the “hook.” We will not make marina reservations, however you may book dates at nearby marinas on your own. You will need a dinghy to participate successfully in the cruise. Likewise your anchor light should be operational, your propane tanks full and your water tanks topped off.

schedule: First rendezvous Sunday, Aug 12 at 1100 hrs at Decker Island for a gin fizz party. Over night at Decker Island on the hook. Monday, cruise Three-Mile Slough to Potato Slough, overnight on the hook. Tuesday move on to Three River Reach for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Friday members may go on to Georgiana Slough for more cruising enroute to Steamboat Slough or return to the Bay.

There will be activities to sharpen the mind and nonsense to make you smile. Nothing is mandatory except sun block. Signups will be close on  August 1.

Sail down to Catalina Island

Hello cruisers

At the request on a number of boat owners who would like to get a little offshore experience we are putting together a cruise to Catalina Island this summer

Catalina Yachts is having its 25th annual gathering on July 13 & 14th at Two Harbors and we have been invited to join them. Because of the very busy summer season and availability of moorings it is best to arrive by Wednesday July 11th to assure a mooring ball. That being said, we can depart the gate on Sunday to arrive by midweek if we sail directly. Those that want to depart earlier and stop at Monterey or other ports along the way would be free to do so. This trip is not limited to Catalina sailboats, all boaters are welcome to join us.

Should the weather not co-operate due to sea conditions that are not satisfactory, we would perhaps stop at Monterey for a shortened cruise.

You may elect to return from Catalina via a short visit to a Southern California port. Transient berths are generally available should your schedule or weather preclude you from an immediate return trip home.

We are planning a meeting on May 5th at 6:30 in the Regatta Room at OYC. If you would like to sail down with us or just learn more about our plans please feel free to join us. Our goal is to provide an overnight sailing and navigation experience.

2007 Baseball Cruise (recap)

The Baseball Cruise was a “hit” again this year!  Over the weekend of June 8-10, 18 boats cruised over to South Beach Harbor to enjoy camaraderie, baseball, food, drink, and surprisingly beautiful weather!  On Friday evening we gathered for a meet and greet cocktail hour.  Because of limitations in the South Beach area for large group dinners that offer a reasonable selection at a reasonable price, both Friday and Saturday dinners were left open for member choice.  This seemed to be well received and smaller groups formed as members headed off to the restaurant of their choice.

On Saturday members enjoyed a beautiful morning, followed by an afternoon in the stands at AT&T Park watching the Oakland A’s thoroughly trounce the SF Giants.  Special recognition goes to avid A’s fan Carmen Konkle who handled the A’s victory with class and chose not to make the Giants fans feel too much worse than they already did.  After the game Sandy and Anne Jacobson hosted club members aboard their beautiful boat for a cocktail hour, and while on Nem Tudom we observed that Anne does truly beautiful varnish work!  Thanks Sandy and Anne for hosting us!  Sunday was another peaceful and sunny morning and members enjoyed some great breakfast choices at the nearby establishments before departing.

Thanks to all of the members who attended this event, with special recognition to Joe Hickingbotham who cruised down on Friday from his delta berth in Willow Berm Marina, and to Tony and Monica Au who traveled up from Fresno by train, then bussed over to their boat in Alameda, and then cruised over to South Beach.  This again demonstrates that OYC members really are the friendliest on the bay!  Finally, a very big thank you to Cornelia and Ed Gould for co-chairing this cruise with Mary and me.  Click here to see the photos.

Forest J. Campbell  July 12, 1908 – April 29, 2007 Resident of Antioch

Forest Campbell died April 29, 2007 at the age of 98.  He resided in Palm Springs for 30 years before moving to East County to be closer to his two daughters.  After his wife, Helen, died in 2003, he enjoyed a renewed friendship with his first wife, Betty Franson, until she passed away in April of 2006.  They spent their last years together at Madison Care Home in Concord, and finally, Country Place Assisted Care in Antioch.  The family is grateful for the wonderful  caregivers at both facilities.  For many years, Forest was active in the boating community.  He was Commodore of Oakland Yacht Club in 1956, and Commodore of NCPCA in 1962.  He participated in many “over-the-bottom” powerboat races with his 42’ ChrisCraft, Sea Lark, which tested his navigation and tactical skills.  His many trophies have been passed on to crew members and his family.  He was a member of the Masonic Brotherhood, Reno Lodge No. 13, in Reno, NV since the early 1940’s.

Forest owned and operated Provision Meat Company in Oakland until his retirement in 1963.  After retirement, he enjoyed an active life of travel, boating,  piloting his Cessna airplane, and playing golf.  He leaves two daughters, Joan Dueming and Susan Qualls, their spouses, five grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.  Graveside services will be held in Oregon at a later date.
